Where to Find Discount Wedding Supplies

Save Money By Shopping at Hobby Stores and Other Budget Shops

Dec 18, 2008 Denise Oliveri

Shopping for wedding supplies can be a daunting task, especially when seeing high retail prices. Don't skimp on quality, but control your budget, with these suggestions.

One of the major causes of wedding stress is the financial burden it can place on both the bride and the groom. A common misconception is that a wedding has to cost a lot or it will look and feel cheap. Nothing can be further from the truth. A wedding can be classy, tasteful, and memorable while not sending either the wedding couple or their parents to the poor house. Here are a few tips on how to wisely shop for those wedding supplies you want without feeling that you are sacrificing taste for tacky.

First find a theme or a picture that captures what it is you want to express in your wedding. Look in all the magazines and pamphlets to your heart's desire. Don't buy anything from any store or shop that has the word "wedding" in its title. Instead look to these places.

Hobby Stores

These stores are an excellent source for silk flowers and flower arrangement supplies. The national chains even have people there who can show you how to select just the right flowers for:

  • Tables
  • Pew
  • Reception hall decorations

They also tend to have a large selection of inexpensive candles on hand, which can be either placed in glasses or floated on the surface of water placed in colorful bowls. This combined with a silk flower arrangement can create a stunning table centerpiece at a relatively low cost.

Fabric Stores

Do not overlook the simple fabric store. All such stores often have various sales on materials, which they have an odd amount in stock. Ribbons, tulle, lace, and silk fabrics can be found at reasonable (and often discounted) prices.

With a little work, imagination, and a bolt of teal or a few yards of silk, you can really make tasteful accents to tables or chairs. Fabric stores are also another source of silk flowers.

Wholesale Restaurant Suppliers

If you want an elegant look to your table then look into inexpensive stemware instead of those plastic Champagne toasting glasses. Restaurants use these suppliers for their bulk purchases so why shouldn't you. They also are ideal if you want to supply your own plates, cups, and napkins. Find an odd shipment or a slightly damaged consignment and you might discover a complete usable wedding sized set at a bargain price.

Discount Party Supply Stores

If you want to add unique accents like paper lanterns then look into the various numbers of discount party supply houses and stores that are around. They are also an excellent source for napkins and other paper accessories you may wish to use.

Dollar Stores

Most people overlook this recent addition to the retail service industry. Dollar stores have more than toys and discounted cleaning supplies. Most have an extensive area of bridal supplies, including:

  • Gift bags
  • Tissue paper
  • Ribbons
  • Wedding favors

And, they are all for a dollar. This is an especially good idea for the items that you will never see again after your wedding day.

Overstock Discounters

Stores such Ross and T.J. Max offer bargain prices for items that have become overstocked in the regular retail outlets. While many of their items are heavily discounted, they are also usually found in limited quantities. So if you find something you really like then make sure you buy slightly more than you planned for because there will most likely not be a chance to find it again.

Online Suppliers

There are a great number of wedding suppliers that sell directly to the customer online. Make sure you check the prices against what it would cost for you to find it elsewhere, as shipping is almost always a concern with driving up the price you are willing to spend. Use this source for those items that are truly unique such as ice sculptures.

If you follow these simple tips, you can have a wedding that is both tasteful and elegant at a quarter of the cost of using a pre-arranged wedding package. Just think of the honeymoon you can have with the money you saved.
