This guide outlines four different options for tieing the knot in the heart of Shropshire - from the registry office to an historic castle, the choice is yours.

Getting married is the one day that you want everything to go right. It is important to choose the venue for your civil ceremony carefully. Shrewsbury and the surrounding area has a wide range of options.

Shrewsbury Registry Office, Column Lodge, Preston Street, Shrewsbury SY2 5NY. Tel: 0845 678 9016

At just over £100, this is the least expensive option. However, you don’t get the feeling that you are getting married on the cheap! The Registry Office houses a tastefully decorated room with high timber beams. Seats a maximum of 35 guests. No parking on the premises, however there is plentiful parking close by. The main disadvantage is that there is no area outside to take group photographs. An alternative is Attingham Park, easily accessible three miles to the south.

Shrewsbury Castle, Shrewsbury, SY1 2AT. Tel 01743 361196

Comparable in price to Shrewsbury registry office, this is a surprisingly inexpensive venue (However, don’t forget the additional cost of hiring out the registrar, which more than doubles the expense). There is no doubt that this provides an atmospheric and memorable venue for your big day. Cost includes facilities for group photographs in the castle grounds. For a small additional fee, a waiter is available to serve champagne, although you should provide any drinks and glasses yourself, as the premises does not hold a drinks license. Seats a maximum of 36, including the couple (this figure includes any babes in arms and small children sitting on adults' knees). Parking close by.

The Mytton and Mermaid Hotel, Atcham, Shrewsbury, SY5 6QG. Tel: 01743 761220. Email them.

Three miles outside Shrewsbury, this beautiful rural setting is the perfect backdrop for an intimate, elegant wedding. Looking like something straight out of a Jane Austen novel, The Mytton and Mermaid has a dedicated wedding room for a maximum of 70 guests. Great photo opportunities abound whilst enjoying your champagne in the courtyard, or down by the river. There are superb facilities on site for your wedding breakfast and after ceremony meal(maximum 70 and 130 diners respectively) The food is outstanding, for meat eater and vegetarian alike. Don’t forget the great choice of stylish, comfortable rooms for you and your guests. Plentiful parking.

Rowton Castle, Halfway House, Shrewsbury SY5 9EP. Tel 01743 884044 Email them.

Six miles to the west of Shrewsbury, historic Rowton Castle is the place for you if you want a bigger, grander wedding. Luxury and quality are the keywords for this venue, which was nominated for best wedding venue in the wedding awards 2007. The Cardeston suite seats a maximum of 110 guests for your ceremony. Like the Mytton and Mermaid, complete packages are available from £3500 upwards.
