Tips for a Memorable Wedding Day that Won't Break the Bank

When little girls start dreaming about their wedding day, they likely don't spend too much time calculating the equally big costs associated with it.

For most couples, a wedding can represent the biggest cost aside from their house. But with a little bit of planning and creativity, newlyweds can look back on a memorable wedding day that didn't break the bank.

When couples choose a reception hall, they are often locked into selecting a caterer from the hall's pre-approved list, limiting their menu options. An outdoor wedding at a park or in a woodsy backyard erases hall rental fees and opens the door to creative choices when it comes to the wedding menu.

Consider an Outdoor Venue

If you choose a backyard wedding, consider splurging on a rented tent. It will keep guests cool on a hot day, and will also provide shelter in case of rain.

Skip the Caterer

Couples can save a bundle if they're able to do their own food, an option that allows a spark of personality to shine through. Large grills are available for rent, and most families have a grillmaster who would be thrilled to man the flames for the special occasion. Bratwurst, exotic burgers such as venison or buffalo and barbecued pork are all great options for a casual wedding, while shrimp, salmon and steak are ideal for a more upscale event. A variety of side dishes including potato salad, baked beans or pasta salad can be made in advance, eliminating any last-minute stress.

Try Resale Shops for Your Dress

Local vintage clothing stores or resale shops often have wedding dresses in stock, but if not, try eBay or other online sites for beautiful dresses that can be had for a song.

Grow Your Own Flowers

If you are planning a late summer wedding, consider growing your own flowers for the event. Plant flower beds near the ceremony site if you can. Otherwise, select your favorite flowers for cutting and plant them so that they'll be blooming just in time for your wedding day. Collect a variety of vases from resale shops to add visual interest to your tabletops.

Do Your Own Music

In place of a DJ, consider recording your favorite songs on CDs. Include one for the ceremony, and have several others on hand for the reception. If you prefer live music for the ceremony, a single violinist can make a big, but budget-friendly statement.

Let Them Eat Cupcakes

Rather than spending hundreds, or even thousands, on a wedding cake, bake up cupcakes in advance. They can be arranged on a tiered serving platter to resemble a wedding cake, and can be easily decorated to match your color scheme.

Memory Makers

Plan something special for your guests so that your wedding day won't soon be forgotten. For a summer wedding, consider renting a snow cone machine to keep guests cool. Various online vendors offer exotic syrup flavors, and ice can be shaved in advance, allowing guests to serve themselves. Popcorn machines are also available from most rental facilities, and would be an ideal choice for a movie-themed wedding.
