A Valentine's Day wedding is romantic, but not necessarily ideal. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of a February 14 wedding.

Should you have a Valentine's Day wedding? Is this the ultimate romantic beginning to a marriage or a logistical nightmare? Here are some pros and cons of getting married on or around February 14.

Wedding Expenses

  • Disadvantage: Rental fees and other wedding expenses can skyrocket around Valentine's Day. The weekend closest to February 14 is probably quite pricey, especially if Valentine's Day actually falls on a weekend.
  • Disadvantage: Floral prices may be at a premium!
  • Advantage:With the exception of Valentine's Day, February is generally an inexpensive month to get married. Warmer months almost always are more expensive. If you're willing to have your wedding a few weeks before or after February 14, you might actually get some great discounts.

Wedding Venue Availability

  • Disadvantage:Popular wedding venues book quickly for Valentine's Day. If Valentine's day falls on a weekend, it may be quite difficult to locate an available venue unless you book months or even years ahead of time. You might also be competing with other Valentine's Day functions.
  • Advantage: Again, February is a slow month in the wedding industry, so venues might be easy to book a few weeks before and after the 14th.

Wedding Theme

  • Advantage:Valentine's Day weddings come with a built-in theme. Think red roses, red bridesmaid dresses, centerpieces with heart-shaped bases, candy Valentine hearts on the tables, and anything else you can imagine. If you're the sentimental type, you can have a blast coming up with sweet little details.
  • Disadvantage: You might feel pressured to do a Valentine theme even if you don't want that. The hearts-and-roses theme is pretty cutesy and may not be for you.

Wedding Guests

  • Advantage: For out-of-town guests, February generally is an inexpensive time to travel. Hotel rooms and airfare discounts will be much easier to find than in the warmer months.
  • Disadvantage:Your wedding may disrupt other people's romantic Valentine's Day plans.
  • Disadvantage: Some people hate Valentine's Day, especially if they're single. If you think it's depressing to attend a wedding without a date, try attending a Valentine's Day wedding without a date.

Wedding Anniversary

  • Advantage: If you're the sentimental type, an anniversary on or near February 14 is so romantic.
  • Disadvantage: If you ever get divorced, Valentine's Day may be ruined forever.
  • Disadvantage: Just like kids who have birthdays around Christmas, you'll be getting lots of combined Valentine's Day-anniversary gifts.

Weather Concerns

  • Disadvantage:It's the middle of February. Ouch.
  • Disadvantage: Winter travel may be difficult for your out-of-town guests.
  • Advantage: If you live in a warmer climate, out-of-town guests will enjoy flying in for your wedding. Besides, what's more romantic than getting married on Valentine's Day and at a beautiful location like a beach?
