Shopping for a wedding dress may be one the most wonderful or the most frustrating experiences of your life. Knowing what to expect can help you to be prepared.

Some ladies have had the perfect wedding dress in mind since they were four years old. Most women, however, need a little assistance when it comes to shopping for a dress. Searching for wedding dresses online is usually the first things a woman does after she gets engaged. Beware, though, that even if you find beautiful dresses online, they may not look the same way on you or they might not fit your body type. It is almost impossible to tell what a dress is going to look like once it gets on your body.

Getting Started

A good starting place is to look in the phone book and find out which bridal shops are available in your area. Most larger towns have a David's Bridal or The Bridal Shop that you can go to and actually try on dresses. Upon entering the shop, most chain stores will ask you to fill out some profile information that they can put into the system. Usually they will want to know basic information such as your name and the date of your wedding. Then you can tell them the sort of dress that you are looking for and they will go and pull out a few that you might like.

When you to shop for a wedding dress, you will need to take at least one other person with you. It should be a close friend or family member who will tell you the truth about how you look in the dress. Once you begin trying on dresses, this person will also need to come into the dressing room with you to help you get the dress on properly. Some of these dresses are complicated and actually weigh as much as 30 pounds.

Choosing a Dress

Begin by trying on several different types of wedding dresses. Once you determine which style looks the best on your body type, you can begin looking for other dresses in the same style. Never, ever buy a dress on the first day that you try it on. When you find one or two that you like, ask the sales person to make a note of it on your profile. You should do this at each store you visit. Some salespeople will ask you make a follow up appointment with them to discuss purchasing the dress. Do not make a follow up appointment unless you are considering buying one of the dresses from that store. After a couple of weeks of shopping, you should go back to try on your favorites again. You might even want to bring someone different with you to check out the dresses. By this time, you should have a good idea of what you want and be able to find the perfect wedding dress that will make you look your best on your big day.
