After the first romantic sparks fade, the engagement can be a stressful time for the couple. Find a way to show the love.

Almost immediately after the proposal, acceptance and announcement, the whirlwind begins. There are plans to be made, gowns to be fitted, invitations to send and receptions to organize. Not only are there more things to do than there is time to do it, the costs can skyrocket. It’s a good idea for the engaged couple to take some time for each other, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Find impromptu ways to say “I love you.”

  • Leave love notes in unexpected places.
  • Give each other an impromptu massage.
  • Stop what you’re doing, look the other one in the eye, and say, “I love you.”
  • Write a message on the bathroom mirror with soap.
  • Make a list of favorite things about each other.
  • Stand outside her window at night and serenade her.

Thoughtful ways to say “I love you.”

  • Change the oil in her car.
  • Make his favorite snack and put it in his lunch bag.
  • Wash the other one’s car.
  • Offer to do anything the other wants for an entire day or weekend.
  • Write each other a song.

Romantic Gift Ideas for Her

Expensive presents are fun, but sometimes it really is the thought that counts. Give her a gift card for no reason. Make a wildflower bouquet and tie it with her favorite color ribbon. Treat her to a spa day at home with a head massage and pedicure.

Romantic Gift Ideas for Him

Guys like surprise presents, too. Have a personalized calendar made that he can put on his office wall or desk. Fill a decorative jar with his favorite cookies or candy and attach a love note. Knit him a sweater or socks.

Dating Tips and Ideas

  • Re-enact the first date.
  • Take a thermos of coffee to a park and watch the sun rise.
  • Go roller skating at the park.
  • Visit a strawberry or blueberry farm and pick whatever is in season.

Inexpensive Date Ideas

Most couples need to save money for the wedding and honeymoon, so try something fun that doesn’t cost much. Go to the beach or park and fly kites. Rather than eat out in expensive restaurants, cook a meal together and eat in the dining room by candlelight. Spend a Saturday afternoon window shopping. Play board games or work on puzzles at night. Burn a CD with favorite love songs and don’t forget to include the song that was playing during the first kiss. Go parking and make out like teenagers. Bring CDs and a boom box to a hill or secluded beach and dance under the stars. When in a public place, like a mall or on a busy street, stop older couples and ask for relationship advice on keeping the romance alive.

As the wedding day gets closer, it's more important than ever to show each other love. Wedding plans are important, so talk about them. However, don't put the wedding ahead of the relationship.
