Money Saving Tips on Getting the Honeymoon of Your Dreams

Aug 27, 2008 Amanda Stopek

Dreams of a honeymoon can be almost as extravagent as dreams of a wedding. How do you begin? How can you save money?

While planning for your wedding, you have heard over and over that it is all about you; that this is your day. How many times though, have you considered what others would want? What if the bridesmaids do not like the dresses? What if the guests don’t like the food?

During the planning of your honeymoon, however, it is all about you! You and your spouse get to plan a vacation that meets each and every one of your wishes and desires.

Honeymoon planning should not be put off. To ensure you get to go to your dream destination, planning for the honeymoon should begin soon after the engagement. To be sure and fulfill all of your dreams, begin by dreaming.

Sit down with your spouse-to-be and compile a list of anything you would like to include in your honeymoon planning. A good place to start is to imagine what kind of honeymoon the two of you would like to have. Do both of you have your hearts set on relaxing poolside or is a historical tour more your style?

Here are some honeymoon ideas for the two of you to consider:

  • Single location or Multipart?
  • Foreign or domestic?
  • Exotic, adventurous, or relaxing?
  • Deluxe resort or intimate hotel?
  • Pay as you go or All Inclusive?

Once you have an idea of what you would like, it is time to talk to a travel agent. A travel agent will have extensive knowledge on fun and exciting places for a honeymoon. They will be able to take care of all the small details and any mishaps along the way.

When looking for a travel agent, there are several questions to ask:

  • Does this travel agent specialize in leisure vacations?
  • Has the agent planned any honeymoons and do they have references you can contact?
  • Has the agent personally been to any of the destinations they are considering for your honeymoon or do they have brochures you can look at?
  • Will you need to come back in for your tickets, conformations, and maps or will they be delivered to you?
  • What will you do in case of emergencies?
  • Is your travel agent genuinely concerned about meeting your needs?
  • Do they have an extensive questionnaire that will assist you in identifying your mutual desires for your dream honeymoon?
  • Are they familiar with the cultures of foreign and domestic locations?
  • Do they have a list of everything you will need to travel to your final destination, i.e. passport, birth certificate etc.

It is a good idea to keep costs in mind along the way.

Easy tips to keep the cost within your budget are:

  • Staying close to home
  • Protecting yourself by taking along traveler’s checks or an ATM card
  • Stocking up on necessities at home
  • Staying at a resort that offers full in room amenities, eating out gets expensive.
  • Every destination has a high season and an off season. Consider a destination currently experiencing their off season.
  • Travel Agents are very aware which cruise lines, resorts etc. are offering specials, don’t be afraid to ask about those first.
  • Leaving on Tuesday or Wednesday is always much less expensive then leaving on Sunday or Monday. Plus it gives you one day to regroup and rest for a day before having to travel right away.
  • Don’t forget there are many people who have time shares that offer beautiful resort locations. Asking them for a week of their timeshare for a wedding gift can be a good idea.
