Planning your non-traditional wedding can be frustrating if you don't want traditional elements. Here's how to keep your cool and have fun planning your wedding.

Whether you are trying to save money or simply don't want a large, elaborate wedding, getting the ceremony you want can seem daunting. You may not want some of the elements that seem unavoidable in wedding magazines, television shows and bridal fairs, and may feel frustrated with the importance placed on them. However, planning your non-traditional wedding doesn't have to be as tricky as you may think.

Decide What Wedding Ceremony Elements are Important to You

Sit down with your partner and discuss what traditional elements of the wedding ceremony are truly important to you. Do you want dancing? Does your partner want speeches? This is a time for honesty but also a time for compromise when needed. Be open with each other about planning your wedding, but also remember that it is a day for the two of you.

Stand Firm with Wedding Vendors

Having a non-traditional wedding can be a hard concept for vendors who are used to providing elements such as the cake, dress, photography and flowers. Be polite yet firm with the wedding ceremony elements you have decided on and do not get carried away by vendors' excitement. Remember that nothing is truly necessary in a wedding except the two of you and the legal pronouncement.

Be Honest with Friends and Family About Wedding Choices

A non-traditional wedding can be difficult for friends and family too, particularly if family customs or expectations arise. You and your partner can decide the best strategy for discussing your wedding with your loved ones, but remember to be as honest as possible. If you do not want a large bridal shower, for instance, it is better to make that known than to be unhappy later. Just be sure to remain tactful and kind.

Have Fun Planning Your Wedding

Even if you didn't grow up dreaming about your perfect wedding, it will still be a fun day. Keep that in mind when planning your non-traditional wedding, even though it can be frustrating at times. Non-traditional weddings afford you an opportunity to put your unique mark on the day, so relax and let your creativity shine through.

While it may seem that the world insists you have a large, elaborate wedding, you don't need to have anything you don't want to. Planning a non-traditional wedding puts you up against many traditional elements, but remember to stand your ground and be honest and tactful with those around you. Above all, remember to have fun.
