Wedding cakes can cost a fortune but brides on a budget can still have an amazing cake without the designer price tag. Just follow our Suite tips.

A designer wedding cake with multiple tiers can cost upwards of $1,000 which is beyond the reach of most budget conscious brides. Yet there are many innovative ways to approach the problem of offering guests a mouth-watering dessert without breaking the bank.

Cheap Wedding Cake Ideas:

Cupcake Wedding Cakes

Forget traditional wedding cake and offer guests cute little cupcakes instead. Highly fashionable and recommended by the gurus of wedding planning like Martha Stewart, cupcakes cost very little and can be made with different fillings to please different tastes. They can be beautifully displayed on a tiered stand or left on place settings to double as wedding favors, saving even more money.

Fake Wedding Cake

Have the bottom tier(s) made of Styrofoam and serve the “real” (sheet) cake from the kitchen. Guests will never know and you will still have a gorgeous looking cake to cut for photographs.

Simple Filling

Simple flavoured sponge fillings cost far less than cakes made with liquor-laden heavy fruit. They are lighter on the stomach and pocket and certainly more palatable after the wedding meal.

Rent a Cake

Now becoming more popular, many bakers offer a hire service so couples can “cut” the cake of their dreams and serve a cheap sheet cake to wedding guests.

Hire a Catering Student

Many catering students will jump at the chance to add a wedding cake to their portfolio, and for a small fee plus the cost of ingredients can bake modern wedding cakes to suit all tastes.

Choose Alternatives

If traditional wedding cake is not desirable, serve an alternative dessert like cheesecake or even a cake made out of cheese (see the picture below).

DIY Wedding Cake

Keen cooks can create their own amazing cake, and even novices can make beautiful cupcakes with a little help from friends and relatives. Or simply bake everyone’s favourite, carrot cake, and cover with delicious lemon frosting to serve as cake-cum-dessert.

Get Married Abroad

With a small number of guests and a hot environment, wedding cake will not be necessary!

Still Want a Designer Wedding Cake?

Omit the “W”

If a designer cake is still a must-have, don’t mention the “wedding” word when visiting bakeries. Savings of at least 25% can be made if the cake is supposedly for an alternative occasion.

Negotiate a Simple Design

Although unusual wedding cakes are great to look at, keep the shape simple and minimise intricate fondant decorations to keep labour costs down. Negotiate hard with the baker as there is no such thing as a set price for a unique wedding cake and in the current financial market, the buyer is king.

Inexpensive Wedding Cakes

Whether bought, hired, faked or simplified there is an affordable wedding cake option for every bride on a budget who still wants to impress her guests with a cake to die for.
